After a similar effort last year fizzled, Mayor Todd Gloria has renewed a push to transfer city hiring authority from the historically independent Personnel Department to his office.
Three members of the San Diego Civil Service Commission voted to fire Personnel Director Douglas Edwards this week, the latest development in a long effort to transfer authority for city hiring from the independent department to the Mayor’s Office.
The Mayor’s Office declined to comment on the firing, referring questions to the Civil Service Commission. Von Wilpert declined to comment on the commission vote Monday but issued a statement afterward saying she continues to support the idea of amending the city charter to transfer hiring authority from the Civil Service Commision to the Mayor’s Office.
