As other airlines recover from harsh winter weather across the U.S., Southwest says it has no choice but to fly just one-third of its schedule for the next several days.
Southwest Airlines, which in San Diego canceled nearly 200 flights Tuesday, said it would continue to operate with a reduced schedule for the rest of the week, slashing its overall schedule by two-thirds.
The public apology was of little consolation to the throngs of passengers stranded at the San Diego airport, waiting in frustratingly long lines to re-book flights, consoling tired children, searching for their luggage, and hoping, just maybe, to snag a rental car for an extended road trip back home. Still, others had no option but to wait it out at the airport overnight.
Southwest Airlines blamed the widespread disruption on recent “extreme winter weather,” saying snow and cold temperatures last week forced changes to flight schedules “at a volume and magnitude” that continued to have repercussions early this week. Expectations are that more delays and cancellations will be coming through much of this week.The San Diego International Airport’s own website shows Southwest flight cancellations only through Tuesday evening, including an 8:25 p.m.
Airline experts and officials with the San Diego airport said Tuesday that the cascade of canceled flights from a single airline is unlike anything they had ever seen before. Still, the fallout from the initial stormy weather shouldn’t come as a total surprise, given Southwest Airlines’ operational structure, says airline analyst Henry Harteveldt.
