San Jacinto College has been named as a finalist in the Aspen Institute's 2023 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.San Jacinto College has been named a finalist for the Aspen Institute's 2023 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, which singles out the top 10 community colleges in the nation.
This year’s citation is the fourth consecutive time San Jacinto College has been named a finalist, Brenda Hellyer, the college's chancellor, said in a press release. “Being a part of the Aspen Prize process has made San Jacinto College a better community college. The real prize is the credentials our students earn every year,” Hellyer said.The Aspen prize is awarded every two years to community college institutions deemed to excel in areas including teaching and learning, certificate and degree completion, transfer to four-year institutions and equitable outcomes for students of color and diverse economic backgrounds.
Since 2011, the college has increased the number of certificates and degrees by nearly 72 percent and continues to build additional educational campuses and programs, including its Maritime Technology and Training Center and Petrochemical, Energy and Technology campuses, the associate degree nursing program and a bachelor of science in nursing program for the college’s first bachelor’s degree.
