Santa Clara County Supervisor Cindy Chavez and San Jose Councilmember Matt Mahan are facing off in November’s general election.
With only three months to go until Election Day, the race to become the next mayor of San Jose is heating up as candidates Cindy Chavez and Matt Mahan scoop up major endorsements — with some crossing the city’s deeply entrenched business and labor divide.
Over the years, both women have tended to vote in line with the council’s business bloc, led by Mayor Sam Liccardo — a juxtaposition to Chavez’s record that includes a stint as the head of the South Bay Labor Council. Davis emphasized that “experience matters,” noting that Mahan was elected to public office for the first time in 2020.
“On important issues from homelessness, to crime, to affordable housing Matt Mahan offers a common-sense plan for progress, accountability, and pragmatic solutions,” Liccardo said in a statement. “Matt is the kind of common-sense Democrat we need in leadership to ensure that our government works as hard as our San Jose families, at a time when too many families struggle to balance budgets amid surging inflation.
