Suspect may have been seen at police headquarters then at airport substation before he fired at officers during traffic stop, then later wounded officer after home confrontation, authorities say.
SAN JOSE — A man suspected ofover this past weekend, hours after he opened fire at other officers who had stopped his car, was apparently following police officers in the hours prior to those confrontations, authorities said Tuesday.
“I am eternally grateful we did not lose any officers in these senseless attacks,” Mata said at a Tuesday news conference at police headquarters. A man reportedly shot at two officers attempting a traffic stop in East San Jose, then shot and wounded an officer during a confrontation a few hours later, authorities said.
Later in the night, just before 10:30 p.m., police say Mendoza was stopped by two patrol officers near a gas station at the intersection of Story and King roads. Police said he immediately got out of his car and began shooting at the officers, hitting their patrol SUV at least twice, based on a photo of the vehicle’s windshield posted on Twitter.
