He’s never coached against anyone quite like Ryan Williams. On Thursday in Montgomery, Saraland’s star wide receiver became the first sophomore to be named Mr. Football by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. He is the 41st winner of the ASWA’s top individual football award.
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Williams, a quarterback just two years ago, accounted for 42 touchdowns this season in helping Saraland to a 14-1 record and the school’s first state football championship. “We’ve had guys who were fast, guys who played with great body control, who had great hands – Ryan is a combination of all of those things,” Saraland head coach Jeff Kelly said. “He is great off the line of scrimmage. People don’t have an easy time pressing him. He is able to separate on balls down the field. He makes the contested catch. I think what really sets him apart is the competitive nature that he rolls in with every day.
“He was very explosive, very versatile,” Kelly said. “We were able to throw it to him, hand it to him, snap it to him. He created big plays in the punt game. He also created things for his teammates. Even with everyone trying to limit him, Ryan was still able to find ways to affect games in a huge way.”, Williams accounted for six total touchdowns.
