Year after year of drought in some areas of Saskatchewan is putting pressure on producers who are dealing with cumulative effects.
July was hot, and only “one lousy millimetre of rain” fell on the Connick place, Don says. The drought will have put the harvest ahead by around a month, he estimates. Some crops in the area have already come off.
But in this flat, on this day, fire would provide anything but bounty to its current occupants, whose stunted crops are already plagued by the gophers and grasshoppers. A bolt of lightning here could turn bad to black in a hurry, considering the parching wind. In some of these fields, the yield likely won’t even cover the cost of the fuel it takes to harvest, he says.
“Everything went to hell with the drought in the ’30s. I often wonder how many times he wished that Buick was back in the showroom and the money was back in the bank.” , and that it may take years of decent precipitation — maybe two, maybe three — to restore a proper baseline to the soil. Working off the farm to keep things afloat is common practice for many. At one time, the Connicks also worked outside of farming. If they hadn’t, they wouldn’t be here, Norma said earlier.“Does it really need to take all this?”
