Dr. Haissam Haddad said is alternative are continued long waits in emergency rooms and declining quality of care.

Dr. Haissam Haddad said the alternative is longer waits for patients, declining quality of care and an increasingly exhausted core of staff that would all amount to a “circle of dysfunction.”

The causes are complex. He said some of the pressure involves patients with COVID-19. There were more than 400 such patients in the province’s hospitals as of earlier this week. Other patients had surgeries or other care delayed during the pandemic, leading to more serious illness now. Before the pandemic, Haddad said Saskatoon’s hospitals typically ran at or close to 100 per cent capacity, as did their counterparts in Regina. Such ratios are often careful budgetary decisions designed to balance performance and cost. Right before the pandemic, the government announced it would fund 36 new beds in the city in recognition of pressures it faced.
