“We’re always looking for guys that can rush the passer and he has ability to do that,” said O’Day. “We think he has the ability to contribute right away and we think he can also play on special teams.In the second round, 11th overall, the Riders selected defensive back and Regina product Jaxon Ford, the grandson of former Rider player and general manager Al Ford. Last season with the Rams, Jaxon was named a second-team U Sports All Canadian and Canada West All-Star after registering 25.
“It’s crazy. This is an unreal feeling for my family and for me especially,” said Ford. “I’ll come into camp with a positive mindset contributing on the back end for sure. In the seventh round, 57th overall, the Riders selected six-foot-four, 300-pound offensive lineman Evan Floren, from Queen’s University and then the Manitoba linebacker Nick Thomas at 60th overall.
Then defensive lineman Tanner Schmekel went in the fourth round, 35th overall to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Last season with the Rams, he was named a first-team All-Canadian and Canada West All-Star after putting up 14 total tackles, six tackles for loss and two sacks.The CFL Global Draft was also held on Tuesday, with the Riders making two selections.
