If you receive a phone call from someone claiming they’re with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and are demanding money from you in order to avoid being arrested, hang up and report it.

BCSO said the scam caller is claiming to be with the sheriff’s office and said they need to call a specific phone number. If the victim calls back, they’re then asked to pay a fine to avoid being arrested.

“The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office does not take payment by phone, nor will we accept payment to avoid arrest. We also will never ask you to purchase a gift card for any reason,” BCSO said in a statement. Another way to identify the scam call is if you hear a mispronunciation of “Bex-ar” when referring to Bexar County.

“If you live in Bexar County, you know the correct pronunciation is NOT ‘Bex-ar’ County. If you hear a mispronunciation, it should alert you that it may be a scam,” the sheriff’s office said. If you’re unsure if you’ve fallen victim to the scam, you can contact the sheriff’s office at 210-335-6000.
