Texans center Scott Quessenberry comfortable with being fill-in starter
Before joining the Texans this year Scott Quessenberry played in 63 games for the Chargers, including nine starts at center in 2019, during his first four NFL seasons.Scott Quessenberry sent a few texts to Justin Britt, a case of a backup center supporting an absent player still officially listed as the starter. The contents of the messages are personal, as are the reasons Britt is entering his second week away from the Texans and the team’s facilities in Houston.
“We just want what’s best for J.B. We’re thinking about him,” Quessenberry said Wednesday. “If he comes back, the sooner he can get back the better. We like having him around. We like having him in the room. He’s a great guy.”Britt’s sudden absence at practice last Wednesday was jarring. Smith initially said he expected Britt would return by Sunday’s game at Denver. Smith then ruled Britt out on Friday, adding the Texans would be able to disclose more information later that day.
Comparisons to the unknown are futile. Still, the Texans aren’t unfamiliar with supporting absent players on the non-football illness list. Second-round wide receiver John Metchie III has been away from the team since July battling leukemia. Teammates regularly text Metchie, who sent in a video on the first day of training camp and has since visited the team facilities.
