“I was happy to see the University Senate accept the acknowledgement as part of the syllabus template last year. It was one of the positives in a relationship with the Kumeyaay community that has often been strained. I would like to see the statement continue in the syllabus as a clear statement from the University Senate so that no individual feels they are being coerced to espouse a view they don’t agree with.

Sophomore political science and American Indian Studies double major Derrick Herrera — who is from the Kumeyaay Nation and an enrolled member of the Rincon Band of Lusieño Indians — said he wasn’t shocked by the turnout of Tuesday’s vote. Voting to make the acknowledgement optional, he said, makes Indigenous students more vulnerable and highlights the contradictions he regularly sees regarding the college’s values.
