Second death in early March also reported; county says there have been three since start of the year
San Diego State University will reopen two buildings Monday that have been shuttered since Feb. 14, when a single case of Legionnaire’s disease surfaced among its faculty.
It also became clear this week that the region suffered a second Legionnaire’s disease death in early March. Legionnaire’s disease is fatal in about 10 percent of diagnosed cases. With three deaths so far this year, the one-in-ten ratio seems to fit at the moment. But records also show that as has been the case nationwide, legionella infections are increasing in frequency. Through March last year, the region had recorded 24 cases and averaged 17.3 cases from 2020 through 2022, according to the county. Through all of 2022, the region recorded 88 cases.
“He was the only one in our family who had a fever, and that’s why I don’t think it came from our home,” she said. “We just have no idea where he got it.”
