Sea otters showed signs of a severe form of toxoplasmosis that had never been reported in other aquatic animals before, nor had it ever been detected on the California coastline.

“I have studied Toxoplasma infections in sea otters for 25 years, and I have never seen such severe lesions or high parasite numbers,” Melissa Miller, a veterinary pathologist for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, said in a statement.Experts are reporting their preliminary findings to increase awareness surrounding the strain.

Toxoplasmosis is actually common among sea otters — they are vulnerable to the infection because they live near the shoreline, where they may be exposed to the parasite’s eggs in stormwater runoff, and they eat bivalve shellfish that can hold on to the egg stage of the parasite.
