Karl SchneiderSea turtle nesting season is in gear, and one beach goer was lucky enough to witness hatchlings heading to the Gulf.
Her first reaction was to look for birds. She said she previously saw pelicans on her walk and was worried they would get the turtles, but"the coast was clear." Kraus said we've been lucky the area has not seen too many storms, and hatching and nesting has gone well this year, though Tropical Storm Barry did have a minor affect. Overall, the area has not seen too many storms.
The FWC says eggs go through a two-month incubation period and newly hatched turtles will all emerge from the nest at the same time. Female turtles will return to this same beach when grown to lay eggs in nests of their own.The FWC logged 3,191 nested eggs in Collier and 4,752 in Lee in 2018."Bring in your beach furniture and fill your holes," she said."Turn your lights off and no cell phones on the beach at night," Kraus said.
