Sankey believes expansion is necessary to grow the sport from coast to coast.
The Pac-12’s alliance with the Big Ten and ACC was blown to smithereens with the departure of the Los Angeles schools. But the conference still seemingly has an ally within college football — and he’s arguably the most influential person in the sport.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has spoken repeatedly about the need for the West Coast to be relevant on the national stage. In the 12-team format scheduled for implementation as early as the 2024 season , the Pac-12 champion would be all but guaranteed a berth. Regular appearances would boost interest in the postseason across the western third of the country.
“And we’ve not had a national perspective in the playoff for a period of time. Or you could argue that over the last eight years, it has been minimized.”* The Pac-12 has filled just two — and none since 2016 .At the highest level, the sport is consolidating around the SEC specifically and the southeastern region of the country generally. Clemson owns as many berths as the Big 12 and Pac-12 combined.
“We’ve been able to have conversations, with some disagreement in our conference, but coalesced around the recognition of that need for national competition,” Sankey said.playoff expansion last winter, along with the former alliance partners, the ACC and Big Ten.
