Thursday marks the second day of deliberations in the federal corruption trial of former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder and ex-Ohio GOP chairman Matt Borges. The two have pleaded not guilty to racketeering. They face up to 20 years in prison.

Householder and Borges are accused of participating in what prosecutors have described as a cash-for-legislation scheme that personally enriched the conspirators, catapulted Householder to the Ohio House speaker’s office, and delivered a bailout worth more than $1.3 billion to Akron-based FirstEnergy Corp.

Householder and Borges have pleaded not guilty to racketeering. They face up to 20 years in prison. Two Householder allies have pleaded guilty and testified in the nearly seven-week trial. A fifth died in 2021.The jury met for about five hours on Wednesday after hearing a final rebuttal from prosecutors of the defense attorneys’ closing arguments. They did not reach a verdict and were scheduled to return to the federal court room in Cincinnati on Thursday.

Householder has said that he supported the 2019 legislation, House Bill 6, because it was good policy, not because of bribes, and his attorneys haveBorges is accused of bribing an operative working on the campaign to repeal HB6 for inside information. He
