Five of top 20 finishers from 2022 Farmers joined LIV Golf and are barred from PGA Tour, but plenty of great golf and golfers expected this week at Torrey Pines
As to the challenge from an upstart golf tour, the PGA Tour includes enough talent and tradition that it can take a LIV and let live attitude toward the subject.There will be some noticeable absences at Torrey Pines for this week’s Farmers Insurance Open.There were 16 golfers — 10 percent of those who teed it up — from last year’s Farmers field who later joined LIV and are barred from returning this year.
Perez is a local and Leishman a former Farmers champion , but you’d need to run your finger down to 25th place, where Dustin Johnson is listed, to find a “name” finisher missing this year. Interestingly enough. Mickelson, Leishman and Reed all were grouped together for the first two rounds of the 2022 Farmers.
And, of course, for the better part of two decades tournament publicity required only two words: Tiger Woods. The hardcore fan appreciates great golf as much as great golfers. They come away seeing both, often from up-and-comers on the cusp of making a name for themselves.
