As the Senate careened toward the midnight government shutdown deadline, Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.) blamed his Democratic colleagues for the gridlock, pushing back after Democrats suggested that it was GOP amendments that were causing the delay. “Let me explain what’s happening right now,” Hagerty wrote on social media. “Democrat Senators are afraid to take a position on Biden’s failed policies by voting on amendments to the appropriations bill .
” Though the passage of the spending package was not in doubt, amendments to the bill rose as a major point of contention throughout the evening. Senators found themselves at odds over the prospect of voting for a slew of Republican-backed amendments, some of which touched on immigration and border security. Republicans said the Democrats rejected their efforts to send the measures to a vote. Any successful amendment would send the bill back to the House, which has already adjourned for a two-week recess — thus, guaranteeing a shutdow
