Severe storms in the Midwest late today and overnight could pack widespread destructive winds, including a possible derecho. Latest forecast and tips on how to stay safe:
Damaging thunderstorm winds with power outages could be widespread.Severe thunderstorms with widespread damaging winds – possibly meeting criteria for a derecho – are expected Wednesday night and early Thursday morning in parts of the Midwest.
Very hot, humid air in the Plains states will push toward a frontal boundary set up over the upper Mississippi Valley as a vigorous jet stream plunges out of southern Canada into the northern Great Lakes. This fast-moving line of storms could produce widespread damaging straight-line winds capable of downing trees and knocking out power, particularly in the areas shaded in purple and darkest red in the map below.Parts of the Ohio Valley and Northeast might see scattered severe storms on Thursday as a cold front pushes farther south and east. The storms could produce localized damaging wind gusts and an isolated tornado threat, particularly from Ohio into the northern mid-Atlantic.
-Have multiple ways to receive watches and warnings from the National Weather Service. This includes a smartphone app,-With a threat of severe weather overnight, make sure your app has severe weather alerts turned on and your smartphone's "do not disturb" feature is turned off overnight. If using NOAA weather radio, make sure it has fresh batteries and is turned on so you're awakened by any NWS warning issued for your area.
