At least for mermaids, the ocean seems vastly bigger and far more inclusive now, thanks to Disney's new remake of 'The Little Mermaid.'

“She immediately set the bar so high that no one surpassed it,” director Rob Marshall told the publication. “We saw every ethnicity. There was no agenda to cast a woman of color. It was really just, ‘Let’s find the best Ariel,’ and Halle claimed the role.”

Yet, Bailey portraying Ariel is no different than, say, Lauren Anderson, the first Black principal dancer with the Houston Ballet, playing the Sugar Plum Fairy in"The Nutcracker," another fictional work. She played that role for more than 20 years. Nicole Pope, an aerialist, and owner of Odysea Mermaids, grew up watching the 1989 movie. By watching YouTube videos, she taught herself how to swim with her tail and hold her breath for long periods. The Houston native worked as an underwater performer in Florida before moving back to home in 2018 to open her business."We're constantly telling kids in everyday things that magic isn't real, but I want to teach them that there is magic in everyday life.
