SAN FRANCISCO — The main attraction Monday night at Oracle Park was the home debut of 21-year-old phenom Luis Matos. But it was hard not to notice the 6-foot-4, 235-pound hunk of human being hanging behind the batting cage, who also figures to play a major part in the Giants’ future.

That process only just began for Crawford, 22, who has made five starts on the mound and four as a designated hitter since reporting to San Jose last month. Returning from major surgery, the Giants are being extra cautious with their top pick while allowing him to attempt to play both ways, something only Shohei Ohtani has done successfully in the modern era.

The transition to pro ball as a two-way player has presented its challenges, though, beyond the notoriously arduous rehab from Tommy John.
