Harris was with the Giants for less than three years.
Harris, 34, is a Bay Area native. He was born and raised in Redwood City and attended Menlo School, but grew up a Chicago Cubs fan. His father, Rob, grew up in Highland Park outside of Chicago.
He’ll inherit a Detroit organization that is loaded with young talent, but took a disappointing step back this season, leading to the dismissal of Avila after more than two decades with the organization.
