After decades of planning, one of San Francisco's most anticipated parks has an opening date — and we also now know what it's going to look like.will be open to the public on July 17, according to a press release from the Presidio.
As the name suggests, the new 14-acre park sits atop the Presidio Parkway tunnels that finally replaced unsafe and unsightly Doyle Drive in 2012. The park will feature scenic overlooks, trails and picnic areas, alongside some pretty spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The area will be surrounded by meadows that host 180 varieties of plants native to the area.New eateries, a pavilion and campfire circle will be constructed at the nearby visitor center.
Funding for the project came from donors to the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy to a tune of $98 million, according to the group Partnership for the Presidio. "The most anticipated visitor attraction ever planned for the Presidio of San Francisco — Presidio Tunnel Tops — now has an official opening date," the partnership said in a statement."Presidio Tunnel Tops is the result of a decade of community input and consultation with community organizations, health leaders, and park planners with the goal of making national park experiences easily accessible to all.
