The San Jose Sharks have hired longtime NHL forward Mike Grier to become the first Black general manager in NHL history.

The Sharks defeated the Kings 3-2 in ovSince the National Hockey League was first established in 1917 there has never been a Black general manager of any team.
"It is something I am extremely proud of," Grier said. "Since my playing days the league itself has gotten more and more diverse, there are more black players in the league and minority players in the league." Grier comes from a family with experience in leadership roles. His older brother, Chris, is the general manager of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins. Their father was a long-time New England Patriots executive.
"I actually associate him with Willie O’Ree who was the first Black player period and then Val James who was the first Black American-born player. So those two people will be associated with him because he is a pioneer by being the first Black GM in the National Hockey League," Roberson said.
