Eliza Hittman opens up about her recent Sundance breakout
Eliza Hittmana drama eight years in the making. The film offers a quiet, raw glimpse into the life of a pregnant Pennsylvania teenager as she travels with her cousin across state lines to receive an abortion in New York City. Years after those initial pitches, Hittman continues, “I picked it up again…because the relevancy was so overt based on what was happening in the world and in our country with our new president.
By sharing this fictional look into one young woman’s story, though, she hopes viewers will leave with a broader understanding of a vital political moment. “I hope that audiences really reflect on the deep impact of state-to-state restrictions [on abortion],” she says, “and the barriers that women encounter—and that they have a real impact on women’s and people’s lives every day.
I think that the act of what she’s doing in getting on the bus is political. Her whole journey is to reclaim her body, her youth, and her spirit. The movie is subtle and quiet, and it avoids being overtly political in that she never discusses her choice. Her decision has already been made. It’s not about the morality. She’s not conflicted; she’s desperate.marks actor Sidney Flanigan’s film debut; she’s had no professional acting experience.
It’s a long story, but my partner is a filmmaker, and he made a movie in South Buffalo a long time ago. Sidney’s boyfriend was in the movie, so she showed up to a couple of events, and I added her on Facebook. I wrote to her about the movie, but she needed some convincing. My partner did the first steps and talked to her about the opportunity. She was really reluctant—she was living in a house with her friends, playing music, and working at a supermarket. She felt like she had a lot going on.
