Sheila E., part of the legendary East Bay musical family, brings her E-Train band to Oakland jazz club.
There are lots of advantages to pop stardom, but a catalog of hits can get problematic when it comes to drawing up a set list.
Hailing from the illustrious Escovedo clan — last year she and percussion great Pete Escovedo were the first father-daughter pair co-honored by the Latin Recording Academy with Lifetime Achievement Awards — Sheila E. has mostly performed in big venues like the Paramount and Fox Theaters in recent years when she plays the Bay Area. Those concerts featured her on timbales and vocals with her pop-oriented Sheila E. Band, “which is more about entertainment, dancing and singing,” she said.
Rounding out the band are keyboardist Bertron Curtis, guitarist Michael Gabriel, her godson, and Oakland-raised keyboardist Rose Ann Dimalanta, who first connected with Sheila E. through the Pete Escovedo Orchestra and started playing with the E-Train band around 2000. Dimalanta has spent much of the past two decades as a bandleader performing and recording as rad.
