With a surge in depression and anxiety brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, new recommendations say all kids should be investigated for anxiety, but not all experts agree.

If you've felt yourself worrying more in the past few years, you're definitely not alone. In the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the global prevalence of depression and anxiety surged by an astounding 25 percent,. Children, unfortunately, are not immune to this worrying trend, either: More than five million 3-to-17-year-olds in the U.S. are currently diagnosed with anxiety, the most common mental health issue.

Judith Anderson, a health psychologist at the University of Toronto in Canada, says there’s a big difference between feeling on edge every so often and clinical. While the former is simply part of life, people with anxiety disorders often struggle with intense, disruptive worries about everyday scenarios for prolonged periods of time.

None of this is to say that young people aren’t experiencing higher rates of mental health issues brought on by the loneliness of lockdowns, she says. “Social isolation, fear of the unknown, pandemic, negative media, societal instability and doom scrolling have all contributed it,” she says.. It can manifest as fear when they're separated from their parents, and certain phobias are also commonplace.

Micronesia Last of Bigger Nations to Have COVID-19 OutbreakMicronesia Last of Bigger Nations to Have COVID-19 OutbreakMicronesia has likely become the final nation in the world with a population of more than 100,000 to experience an outbreak of COVID-19. For more than two-and-a-half years, the Pacific archipelago managed to avoid any outbreaks thanks to its geographic isolation and border controls. Those people who flew into the country with the disease didn’t spread it because all new arrivals were required to quarantine. But as has been the case in several other Pacific nations this year, those defenses couldn’t keep out the more transmissible omicron variant forever. The government has announced it has become aware of multiple cases across two of the nation’s four states.
