Shouting Ted Cruz pushes Ketanji Brown Jackson on child sex abuse material sentences, to define 'woman'
Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, speaks during a Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing for Ketanji Brown Jackson, associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court nominee for U.S. President Joe Biden, in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Wednesday, March 23, 2022. Jackson held her own against a barrage of Republican attacks centering on crime and race, inching closer to becoming the first Black woman on the Supreme Court in a marathon day of testimony before a Senate panel yesterday.
The exchange came after a series of questions that included Cruz pressing Jackson to define a “woman,” asking if he could “decide I’m an Asian man” in order to sue for discrimination and grilling her about child porn cases in which the GOP says she handed down too light of sentences. On Wednesday, both Texans were pumping up the volume, with Cornyn saying he didn’t find one of her answers “credible.”
“It depends on circumstances?” Cornyn said. “So you put this in the same category as defining what a biological woman is — you’re really not sure.” Republicans, meanwhile, refused to even hold a hearing on former President Barrack Obama’s last pick, Merrick Garland, who now serves as Biden’s attorney general. They controlled the Senate then, but this time, observers say, they’re looking to rack up political points with an eye toward the midterms, when they hope to retake control of the chamber.
