Texas Republicans are promising to do whatever it takes to pass sweeping changes to their state election laws during a new special legislative session
Texas Republicans failed to pass sweeping changes to their state election laws during their legislative session earlier this year, when intra-party squabbling and a last-minute walkout by Democrats in the state House doomed their efforts.
But it isn't clear if a walkout would be successful a second time. Members on both sides of the aisle have obliquely warned that all options are on the table when it comes to making sure the election legislation does — or doesn’t — become law. But in any event, Republicans intend to move quickly on the elections bill, meaning a would-be walkout would have to last potentially weeks, not hours, to be successful.
“I think that we have the buy-in of Republicans in both chambers,” said GOP state Rep. Jacey Jetton, who sits on the House select committee overseeing the elections bill.this time could be expedited. Republicans also hope that a conference committee, where the two bills are merged, and other procedural hurdles don't slow them down this time.
Both men said that, depending on if a committee vote is held this weekend, the bill could see the state House floor as soon as next week.retained provisions that banned drive-thru and 24-hour early voting — two practices piloted by the increasingly Democratic, Houston-based Harris County during the pandemic — prohibits election officials from widely distributing absentee ballot applications and adds new ID requirements to requesting a mail ballot.

Texas GOP renews push for new voting laws, unfinished agendaTexas Republicans on Thursday brought back efforts to ban 24-hour polling places and drive-thru voting as Gov. Greg Abbott opened a special legislative session aimed at notching late victories on a lengthy conservative agenda left unfinished last month. Republicans unveiled the details of the overhaul of the voting laws, a do-over of a push thwarted by Democrats when they walked out of statehouse. Similar to the GOP's the sweeping bill blocked in May, the revived version would also empower partisan poll watchers and ban drop boxes for mail-in ballots, making it what would be one of the most comprehensive reworking of a state’s voting and election system passed this year.

Texas GOP begins hurried second try at thwarted voting lawsRepublican Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday began a hurried second attempt to toughen election laws in Texas, weeks after Democrats' dramatic walkout from the state Capitol thwarted one of America's most restrictive voting measures. The haste reflects the usual time crunch of a normal special legislative session in Texas — which last just 30 days — but also the GOP's eagerness to put behind them a rare and highly public defeat in America's biggest red state over what has been a priority for the party since the November elections.
