OK, that may be a little strong. The Rangers care about development. Thompson, Smith and Ezequiel Duran all figure inSo, too, does the wave of Evan Carter, Dustin Harris and Aaron Zavala. But the team’s priorities have shifted. The focus for the construction of the major league roster is now about winning rather than developing.
It’s not so much what Grossman will do on the field that creates value, but what his signing allows the Rangers to do to the roster. On the field, adding Grossman creates marginal improvement for a team that ranked 29th in WAR in left field last year, according to baseball-reference at -2.7. Add Grossman to the spring roster and the group that constitutes the bucket of left fielders produced a -2.4 WAR in 2022.
It allows the Rangers to potentially move Thompson out of a left field platoon and into more of a fourth outfielder role capable of popping up in any outfield spot more easily. Also, as more of a bench player, it allows the Rangers to choose when and where to use his speed and defense. As the club’s designated pinch-runner option, it removes one major challenge for him: He doesn’t necessarily have to reach base to put his speed to work.
It also makes it more possible for the Rangers to carry a third catcher, which would seem to be necessary if the Rangers want to use Garver at DH when he’s not catching. And a healthy Garver hitting regularly in the middle of the lineup would be the equivalent of adding a big bat during the offseason.
