A look at the new middle class:

There is indeed a lot of evidence describing the destruction of the country’s once strong and broad middle class. Long before the most recent fears, robotics had begun to supplant the once well-paid, semi-skilled manufacturing positions on assembly lines in autos and many other industries. Automatic teller machines replaced clerical positions in banks, while word processing and computer systems did the same to tens of thousands of administrative assistants and bookkeepers.
Employment figures provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics tell the story well. Between 1980 and 2005, the proportion of overall employment held by low-skilled workers rose some 30%. The share of high-skilled occupations – in management and the professions as well as finance – grew a similar amount. But over these 25 years, employment in production and what the analysts of this area refer to as “craft occupations” fell almost 40%.
