Simone Biles is a special gymnast. But in one of the most important changes to her training since 2016, she’s not being coached that way.
Biles and Chiles are both gymnasts at the World Champions Centre, owned by the Biles family. That means they could rotate together around the apparatus at the U.S. Classic. They did the same at the national championships, and again at the Olympic trials, from which Biles and Chiles emerged as 50% of a U.S. team that is the heavy favorite to win the Olympic team title for a third consecutive Games.
With six gymnasts in the senior competition at the national championship, WCC outnumbered any other gym. Biles, who is 24 years old, and Chiles, who is 20, were joined by younger teenaged teammates Amari Drayton, Zoe Miller, Sydney Barros and Karis German. They were also striking as an all-Black lineup, in a sport where Black gymnasts have been relatively rare.
