Simone Biles is withdrawing from the individual all-around final at the Tokyo Olympics, a day after pulling out of the team competition
TOKYO—U.S. gymnastics star Simone Biles said she is withdrawing from Thursday’s individual all-around final at the Tokyo Olympics, a decision that comes a dayBiles is the defending Olympic champion and is undefeated in all-around competition since 2013.
Biles pulled herself from the women’s team final on Tuesday after completing a vault. Biles subsequently told reporters that she was not physically injured but that she was not in the right mental space to compete safely or effectively. Following Biles’s withdrawal, which was announced by USA Gymnastics, another American, Jade Carey, will take her place.
Biles had also qualified to compete in all four women’s gymnastics apparatus finals. USA Gymnastics finals did not say whether she planned to compete and added that she would continue to be medically evaluated daily.
