Majority Leader Steve Scalise abruptly ended his bid Thursday after failing to secure the votes to win the gavel, urging lawmakers to come together and put "agendas" aside. Meanwhile, Rep. Austin Scott of Georgia also The stalemate has stretched into its second week, throwing the House into chaos and leaving lawmakers wondering what comes next as they navigate the uncharted territory.Other potential speaker choices were also being floated. Some Republicans proposed simply giving Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., who was appointed interim speaker pro tempore, greater authority to lead the House for some time.
With the House narrowly split 221-212, with two vacancies, any nominee can lose just a few Republicans before they fail to reach the 217 majority needed in the face of opposition from Democrats, who will most certainly back their own leader, New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries. Some House Republicans have wanted even steeper spending cuts than what the White House and Senate agreed to during the debt limit negotiations, which will face stiff opposition. A new speaker will face the same dynamics as McCarthy, who was unable to get enough GOP support for bills to fund the government, even plans that included steep cuts that were all but certain to fail in the Senate.
