Sprawling event returned after two-year pandemic hiatus; organizers say goal is to educate, enlighten

Thousands from across the region learned about composting, endangered bees, factory farming and other environmental issues Sunday during Balboa Park’s Earth Fair celebration, which was slightly smaller this year after a two-year pandemic absence.

“Every year there are different causes represented and I want to hear what people care about,” said Hillcrest resident Rebecca Jones. “I think the government could do a far better job educating people, and when people get educated they are more likely to pressure the government.” “It’s always interesting to see the new technology and ideas that are out there,” she said. “I think it’s important.”

Parra said the fair is important because of how it can affect people who don’t act responsibly regarding the environment. “This is the first year we’re back and we’ve had some of the hiccups you would expect after a pandemic,” Fitzenz said. “Next year will probably be better for vendors, volunteers and attendees.”
