Slovakia’s president has sworn in a new government led by a former populist prime minister poised to end the country’s military aid for Ukraine as it fights Russia's invasion. Robert Fico returned to power and took over as prime minister for the fourth time after his leftist Smer, or Direction, party won Slovakia’s September parliamentary election.
FILE - Slovakia’s President Zuzana Caputova talks to the media during a news conference in Skopje, North Macedonia, Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022. Caputova was ready to swear in a new Cabinet lead by a former populist prime minister after its junior party accepted her condition to remove an originally nominated environment minister known for his disbelieve in the threat of climate change, the presidential office said on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023.
The reunion of Fico and Pellegrini was key for the creation of the new government. The third partner, the Slovak National Party, is a clear pro-Russian group; it won 10 seats in the legislature. When he served as prime minister in 2006-2010 and again in 2012-2018 Fico had a career diplomat in the post of foreign minister.
A number of the new ministers have been linked with disinformation campaigns or are known for spreading false news, including Culture Minister Martina Simkovicova, nominated by the Slovak National Party.
