He recalled being interviewed by a “shock jock” radio show in Seattle whose hosts “wanted to make fun” of the situation “more than anything else.”

“Back , no one joined me ,” Powell said. “But these guys on the beach, 20 years later, we are of like mind.”Karen Hopkins, a marketing expert, and lecturer at Auburn University’s Harbert College of Business, said she can sympathize with public officials like Kennon who are attempting to defend and promote their communities as safe havens from inappropriate words or activities.

Joe Godfrey, a consultant, and former head of the conservative Alabama Citizens’ Action Group said that controversial business names were “reflective of a decline of our cultural standards” that he said Christian leaders have been complaining about for a long time. “We’re becoming more desensitized to what is rude, crude and vulgar,” Kennon said. “I don’t want to have to explain what ‘Bad Ass’ means to my 8-year-old. I asked someone the other day on if added a byline under that said, ‘The best Mother F’ing coffee in the world’ and whether they would be OK with that. Who draws the line and how do you draw the line?”
