In 2019, a record number of women were sworn into Congress. Did the “Year of the Woman” really change anything in Washington?
And then the partisanship. … In this town, everything is defined by the letter behind your name, and that is very foreign to me. Even when we came in for our initial orientation—I’ve been to over a dozen orientations as a high school teacher. You bring in all the freshmen at the same time, and they all get to know each other.
When I walk onto the Senate floor, I don’t walk on and think to myself, “I’m one of 25 women here.” I walk in and think, “I’m one of 100.” … I don’t say to myself, “Oh, I’m going to go talk to Mazie because I’ve got to talk to another woman because I can’t talk to the guys.” If we’re not all talking to each other and asserting that equality on the floor, then we’re really doing a disservice to ourselves.
We still haven’t successfully changed the procedures for how sexual assault and these kinds of issues can be reported. I agree that all of the offices have their own policies, but we still didn’t make the kind of changes that should be made—such as if there’s a settlement, that that should be paid by the person who actually perpetrated the assault … and still the requirement that before you can pursue a claim, that there has to be a cooling-off period. You have to go in arbitration.
