A racist appeared to be caught on a leaked recording making racist comments. So why is Twitter still allowing him on its platform?

, anyone who is affiliated with a group either on or offline that is found to “engage in and/or promote violence against civilians to advance a political, religious and/or social cause” is in violation of Twitter policy.) However, that claim that is on its face incorrect, as Spencer is the president of the National Policy Institute, a white supremacist organization that has been classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center .

Indeed, on Twitter, where Spencer has a comparatively modest yet substantial 77.7k following, he appears to be making a concerted effort to skirt the platform’s terms of service. Most of his posts are retweets , and few of his own tweets employ slurs or any other indicators of hate speech under official Twitter guidelines, even as they promote far-right ideology.

Such a strategy is certainly consistent with Spencer’s buttoned-up media presence, which has led to mainstream outlets deeming him a “dapper” representative of white supremacy and even esteemed publications like theof him as a symbol for the far-right movement.

Spencer also may very well have taken a cue from the fate that has befallen his former far-right compatriots who have been booted from Twitter from violating their terms of service. Yiannopolous in particular has publicly complained about how being subject to deplatforming has decimated his income, and has primarily posted on the encrypted messaging app Telegram.

It’s possible that, in addition to taking the alt-right infighting to the next level, Yiannopolous leaked the alleged Spencer audio as a way to underscore Twitter’s arbitrary censorship policy . But while Yiannopolous’ own agenda indisputably informs this argument, he would not be the only person to make it. As the 2020 election looms closer and closer, there has been increasingly close scrutiny on social media platforms’ role in promoting misinformation and hate speech.

CNN Responds To Richard Spencer Comments By Apologizing For Not Getting Him To Say Those Things On The ShowCNN Responds To Richard Spencer Comments By Apologizing For Not Getting Him To Say Those Things On The ShowATLANTA—Following leaked audio of the white supremacist’s slur-filled 2017 tirade, CNN responded Monday to Richard Spencer’s comments by apologizing for not getting him to say those things while on the network. “We’re truly sorry Mr. Spencer wasn’t able to espouse his hateful, anti-Semitic rhetoric during our interview, which would have easily secured at least 48 hours of nonstop coverage about whether it’s okay to say such things,” said CNN Chief Washington Correspondent Jake Tapper, who begged for forgiveness for missing an obvious opportunity to provide a nice boost to the network’s ratings. “If we had known beforehand that this white nationalist believed that Caucasians are the one true race or about his commitment to using violence against minorities, we would have provided him with a much bigger platform and at least doubled the length of the broadcast. We really dropped the ball here, and we promise our viewers we will better frame all questions so they elicit this type of vitriol in future segments.” At press time, CNN vowed to make up for this misstep with a weeklong town hall debate comprised entirely of Holocaust deniers.
