After a record wet winter, Southern California can expect more birds, wildflowers and snakes

Rattlesnakes are part of life in Southern California, but there are plenty of misconceptions about them.

“We know that in high-precipitation areas, you have an increase in rodents, because they can forage more easily for food,” said Lipman, a former professor of medicine at Stanford and now the founder of anAt Devil’s Punchbowl Natural Area in the Antelope Valley, park superintendent Jonathan Numer said his teams have already noticed a surge in kangaroo rats, which he said reproduce much quicker than other species, like reptiles or birds.

“When there’s a lot of snowpack, you can kind of expect wildlife to head into lower elevation areas,” West said.
