SoftBank’s new $108 bln vision is broader and fuzzier: targeting anything “tech-enabled” gives Masayoshi Son a very long spending leash, says johnsfoley
SoftBank on June 26 announced it is setting up “Vision Fund 2”, a $108 billion sequel to its earlier private fund launched in May 2017.
The Japanese telecom and investment group intends to put in $38 billion of its own money, and has memoranda of understanding with other investors including U.S. smartphone maker Apple, Taiwanese telecom hardware manufacturer Foxconn Technology and software firm Microsoft. Other contributors named in the announcement include Mizuho Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, MUFG Bank, The Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company, Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, SMBC Nikko Securities, Daiwa Securities, National Investment Corporation of National Bank of Kazakhstan, Standard Chartered and unnamed Taiwanese investors.
Sovereign wealth funds from Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, which put a combined $60 billion into the first Vision Fund, were not mentioned in the press release. SoftBank said discussions were ongoing with additional participants, and the fund could increase in size.
