Meet Dolce & Gabbana's new favorite designer: Sohee Park.
Stefano Dolce and Domenico Gabbana have been supporting young designers for quite some time, hosting newcomers’ collections in D&G retail spaces to give them visibility and recognition. This is testament to their generosity not only of spirit but also of means and resources. “We’ve been young ourselves and we know how pivotal it is to get help and support, it can make a huge difference in the career of an upcoming designer,” they said. “We’re proud to be able to help them.
A Central Saint Martins alum, Park was forced by the pandemic to cancel her physical graduation show in 2020. “I was very disappointed, so I uploaded images of my collection on social media,” she explained. “And it went boom! It blew up from there. All of a sudden, Cardi B, Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus were all wearing my outfits. It has been a crazy ride.” Now she’s launching her own brand, and the collaboration with Dolce & Gabbana is putting her on the map.
Park has no formal training in sewing and embroidery: she learned traditional techniques via YouTube tutorials. “Maybe the fact that I wasn’t trained properly made me be inventive, coming up with something more innovative and fresh. And Central Saint Martins helped me to express the more extreme, authentic version of myself,” she said.
Park’s magnificent creations were made in her London atelier together with her small team. She used an array of sustainable materials, like hansan mosi, a hemp-based woven fabric from South Korea; it’s one of the country’s oldest textiles, inscribed in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Plant-based fibers like pineapple leather and the abaca fabric from banana leaves were also part of the mindful sourcing.
Domenico chimed in: “Creativity for us is paramount, and there’s lots of it here. Sohee’s approach goes beyond trends, and this is what we also appreciate. She isn’t following fashion, probably it’ll be fashion following her. Today we see too many young designers affected by a sort of fashion victim syndrome, but true fashion has to be authentic, spontaneous, honest—and unique, loyal. Being honest is sometimes a risk, because you may not be appreciated.
