“I’ve definitely always been very ambitious,” she says, her Aussie accent distinctly pronounced. “From the minute I graduated high school, I had this vision that I wanted to be a career girl.” Exactly what career she wanted to pursue, though, took some time to figure out. Given her indecision, Waller forwent college and instead opted for a job in government, where she began rising the ranks in the Australia Department of Fair Trading, first in Rockhampton and later in Brisbane and Canberra.
Her parents had relocated to Brisbane, and she was spending a few weeks with them before leaving for the States. Then COVID-19 hit. “I was devastated,” she says. “I was so eager; I was packed and ready to go.” Stuck at her parents’ house, Waller had little else to do but work. While she experienced a slight dip in business at the onset of the pandemic, she leveraged her connections in places like Australia and Dubai that weren’t fully shut down at the time.
