Turned out that crazy idea was a fun distraction from the early part of a lengthy baseball season and a worthy add-on to the NBA playoffs. Well, the USFL and the Houston Gamblers are back. They aren’t making nearly the splash as the originals, who featured future Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly throwing touchdown passes, but they could still be interesting.The Stallions and Generals opened the season for the new USFL on Saturday night. The Gamblers, who are coached by former University of Houston and Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin, begin their season with the second game in the new league’s history11 a.m.
The original USFL was better than minor league — because it signed stars like Walker and Doug Flutie, and had a host of players who player in the NFL — and it failed.
