Previously, children of military or government workers stationed abroad were legally considered to be U.S. residents for purposes of gaining citizenship, and simply had to obtain a certificate to confirm their nationality. But their parents will now have to apply for citizenship for their children before they turn 18.
The policy will primarily affect children born to military or government workers who serve abroad and have not lived in the U.S. for a certain period of time.
