Some New York City power brokers still want Amazon to come back to the negotiating table:

That became clear Friday with the publication of a letter—billed as an “Open Letter to Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos”—in the New York Times signed by a range of business people, community leaders, and labor representatives imploring the company to reconsider last month’s decision not to locate a headquarters facility in Queens despite the promise of valuable tax incentives to do so.

“We know the public debate that followed the announcement of the Long Island City project was rough and not very welcoming,” the letter read. ”Opinions are strong in New York—sometimes strident. We consider it part of the New York charm! But when we commit to a project as important as this, we figure out how to get it done in a way that works for everyone.”

When Amazon announced the decision to bail on Queens, the company said it didn’t plan to reopen a search for a new location; meantime, it recommitted to other expansion plans in Nashville and Washington’s Virginia suburbs. Meanwhile, some other localities raised their hands and declared themselves open for business.

If nothing else, Friday’s news indicates that New York City’s leaders aren’t happy with the way things ended—and made clear that they haven’t given up. The commitments from De Blasio and Cuomo indicate a willingness to expend political energy to get Amazon back. What does Amazon think? That’s the multibillion-dollar question.
