Weird cover versions of popular songs help me understand the music better.

Adding to the delight of it all, there are the unexpected bits I’ve come to love. The band Surfer Blood warms up for an Austin performance in the back of a van with

: “Swipe right, swipe right! It’s a numbers game.” There’s also the guy who confuses the lyrics on his over-the-top acoustic cover of Awolnation’s “Sail,” seeming to replace the lineAs a person with frequent wireless service issues, the new lyric works! It also didn’t bother fan @one2treifor, who commented: “I used your version for my wedding entrance. Man, it’s powerful...Your soul is in this song.”And I think that’s why I love these covers. These performers’ souls are in their songs.

The same holds true with our ears. A new arrangement, an unexpected instrument can change everything. If you strip a song down to its essence, it should still grab you by the throat. Sometimes, despite a guitar flub or an off-key vocal or the street noise in the background, I can actually hear the song — or at least the songwriter’s intention — more clearly. I can finally hear the music.. Christopher Wynn is the Arts & Entertainment Editor of The Dallas Morning News.

As humans we can barely begin to understand what the world looks like to many of the other creatures that inhabit the Earth. But author Ed Yong is helping to paint a picture…In this episode of CultureLab, Christie Taylor speaks to Ed about the paperback release of his book An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us, which looks at more than 100 different species and explores the amazing ways their sensory worlds are shaped by light, sound, vibrations, heat and even electrical charge. To read about subjects like this and much more, visit newscientist.com.
