Violence in South Sudan's Upper Nile state has killed an unknown number of people and displaced just over 9,000, some of whom are hiding in swamps, UN agencies say
Violence is rampant in parts of South Sudan where clashes triggered by local disputes over grazing areas, water, cultivation grounds and other resources often turn deadly.
The latest bloodshed is a continuation of fighting that started in August in a village in Upper Nile and has since spread to other parts of the state and areas of Jonglei and Unity states, the UN refugee agency UNHCR said in a statement on Wednesday. Of these, over 2,300 had sought refuge in the Malakal Protection of Civilians site, a UNOCHA statement said.
Two years later, fighting broke out between troops loyal to President Salva Kiir and his ex-deputy-turned-rival Riek Machar.

North Korea did not criticise ex-South Korean leader for 'abandoning' dogs gifted by Kim Jong UnSocial media users have shared altered screenshots of a North Korean state media programme alongside a false claim that they show Pyongyang criticising former South Korean president Moon Jae-in for 'abandoning' two dogs given to him in 2018 by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The posts surfaced online after Moon announced he would return the dogs to the South Korean government after it failed to agree on who should pay for the canines' care. However, a search found the original North Korean television report was about Kim condemning South Korea for holding joint military drills with the United States.
