Thousands of members of the Southern Baptist Convention meet Tuesday to elect a new president to set the course for the evangelical organization as it attempts to address its handling of sexual misconduct by ministers
and others affiliated with Baptist churches.
Last month, the convention’s executive committee released a 288-page independent report that found that church leaders had covered up sex-abuse claims over two decades, including by maintaining a secret database of alleged perpetrators. It then released a list of more than 700 church leaders and others who had been credibly accused of abuse.
